Where in Alaska is Soldotna and how do I get there?

Pronounced soul-DAHT-nah, Soldotna is the central hub of the Kenai Peninsula, just 150 scenic highway miles south of Anchorage. It is also accessible by plane. Flying from outside the state into Anchorage and then to the Kenai Airport. The Alaska Marine Highway stops in Seward, just 93 miles away.
Not matter what way you choose, travel into Soldotna is impressively beautiful.

Soldotna is located near the coast on the Kenai Peninsula and has very mild weather. Average high temps in July are around 65 degrees. Average high temps in January are around 20 degrees. Humidity is generally very low making for very comfortable weather. Temps do occasionally reach higher in the summer and the lows in the Winter can dip to the negatives. We average 86 inches of snow per year. Great for building snowmen! Not matter what way you choose, travel into Soldotna is impressively beautiful.

What is the weather like, isn't it too cold there?

This one we can’t deny. While not as bad as communities further north, Soldotna gets down to only 6 hours of daylight on the Winter Solstice. On the flip side, we get a summer full on sunshine and long days to enjoy.
One benefit of the long night is the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. An experience that some people wait their entire lives to witness! We also have a tight-knit community with fun events and opportunities to get you out and interacting all year.

Fortunately there are no polar bears near Soldotna. There is a large amount of wildlife. Moose are the most common and you’ll see them walking around town. There are bears nearby in neighboring communities, but they are less often seen in Soldotna. It is good to be aware of these animals and be come comfortable with their presence in your life. Proper precautions should be taken around all wildlife for your safety and theirs.

The Kenai Peninsula is a popular recreation area and seasonal work is often available. Long term positions in education, healthcare, and service industries are also available. Information can be found the Alaska Jobs website. CPH, Kenai Peninsula Food Bank and Kenai Senior Center are good options for Volunteering!

The cost of living in Soldotna is higher than the national average and most other cities in Alaska. The total cost of housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, taxes, health care and miscellaneous goods is $46,728 for a single adult – greater than the national average of $38,433. Most people are surprised at how much food costs here, however it is the price we accept to live in such a beautiful area.

Yes! Both Soldotna and its sister city Kenai have schools. Outside of school programs there is plenty to keep them busy. Central Peninsula Sports Center has an ice rink. Jumpin Junction has an inflatable playground and mini-golf. Boys and Girls Clubs offer summer programs and there are plenty of sports programs to participate in.
